Crossing Over to Livin' Hygge

"Hygge", pronounced hoo-ga, is a Danish word for living in the moment. It's a mindset centered around connecting with family, friends or yourself— laughing, dancing, and cherishing the blessings around you.

At KCL we are in the process of building a walking bridge. A bridge is a structure providing passage over obstacles, and it can be used to describe connecting, transitional or a phase between two conditions or activities. At some point in our lives we have all dealt with voids (loneliness, depression, anger, etc.) that prevent us from crossing over to a Hygge mindset.

I was in need of the laughs, live music and great food shared at the KCL Interesting People dinner last weekend. Thank you to the friends who attended! As a society we avoid conversations regarding mental health, which has resulted in the rate of suicide among our veterans doubling in the last decade. According to VA.gov about 20 veterans commit suicide every single day. The identified precursors include feelings of loneliness, isolation, hopelessness and depression. How can we bridge these gaps with our military/veterans and their families? After all they have done for us to live a life of freedom it's our turn to give back!

One of the Angels among us connected me to www.gallantfew.org. This is an organization that is dedicated to helping veterans establish a life of hope and purpose. My humble request is that you take action today by making a donation to the GallantFew and/or take time to connect by listening to their story...not just say “thank you for your service.” Even better—build a Hygge community around our veterans by inviting them into your lives so together we can be a bridge of light and possibly save a life.
